Amy E. Hackmann, MD, FACS
Associate Surgeon, Division of Cardiac Surgery

Dr. Hackmann received her undergraduate degree in chemistry and her medical degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She received general surgery residency training at the University of South Florida and completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. She completed a research fellowship in vascular surgery at Washington University, St. Louis and a fellowship in cardiothoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Before joining the Brigham, Dr. Hackmann was an associate professor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, chief of Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO) and associate program director of the thoracic surgery residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center, as well as medical director of Cardiovascular/Thoracic ECMO at the Parkland Health & Hospital System. She is a member of various medical institutions, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS).

Dr. Hackmann is an adult cardiac surgeon with a clinical focus in heart and lung transplantation and both temporary and durable mechanical circulatory support. She is involved in education efforts for multiple international societies including AATS, STS and the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). Her research interests include ECMO outcomes, mechanical support for cardiogenic shock and ECMO during CPR (ECPR).

Welcoming New Faculty – Ko Un ‘Clara’ Park, MD

Please join us in welcoming Ko Un ‘Clara’ Park, MD, as a new faculty member in the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Park received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Notre Dame and her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed general surgery residency training at the Henry Ford Health System and a breast surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Before joining the Brigham, Dr. Park was an assistant professor of surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center James Comprehensive Cancer Center. She developed the robotic breast surgery program and initiated the FDA approved clinical trial evaluating the role of robot-assisted nipple sparing mastectomy. She is an implementation science researcher and is funded by the NCI and the Alliance foundation. She will continue her NCI K08 research titled, “Implementation of operative standards in cancer surgery to improve patient outcomes.”

At the Brigham, Dr. Park will also serve as the director of Research for Breast Surgery Network Sites. In this role, she will review the clinical research portfolios at the Brigham sites and help identify opportunities to expand the clinical trials and research programs to the regional sites.

Dr. Park’s primary clinical focus areas are multidisciplinary breast cancer management, oncoplastic breast surgery and nipple sparing mastectomy.

Welcoming New Faculty – John C. Wain, Jr., MD

Please join us in welcoming John C. Wain, Jr., MD, as a new faculty member in the Department of Surgery.

John C. Wain, Jr., MD
Associate Surgeon, Division of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery

Dr. Wain received his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. He completed residency training in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. After a surgical research fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center, he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Toronto General Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Before joining the Brigham, Dr. Wain was the chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and the vice chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. Previously, he worked at Mass General Hospital, North Shore Medical Center and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He’s a member of various societies, including the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Wain’s clinical and research interests include airway reconstruction, chest wall resection and reconstruction, the surgical management of advanced stage thoracic neoplasms, epigenetic alterations in lung cancer, the inflammatory response to pulmonary injury and the physiology of respiration.
